kurnik.org link removal

I don't understand your reasons for removing links to www.kurnik.org. They were relevant to the articles, and useful in my opinion. The linked address was non-commercial online gaming site, so what's the problem? Are you going to remove links to, say, sites containing rules or history of many games just because they are linked from many pages at wikipedia? (by user:62.121.64.57)

I removed the links because you added the same site to a large number of different articles, and in my opinion they did not contribute to the article. If there is a section about the history of the game, or strategy, etc, that complements the wikipedia article, then this would be OK, but I don't think free games fall into this category. If you think that links to free online games don't contribute to articles about games (which is nonsense in my opinion) then please be consistent in removing those links. There are many articles about games that contain links to pages where you can play those games, and some articles' external links are practially just that (e.g. Space_Invaders which is in today's "did you know.." section of the wikipedia front page). If you still think your decision to remove links to kurnik.org was right and don't have time to remove those other remaining links (tons of them), then please let me know and I'll hapilly remove them although I think they do contribute to the articles.

I removed a number of links of different sites. Yet, as Wikipedia has 300,000+ articles, I cannot check all articles, and just do things as i notice them. How about you pick one article (e.g Internet game), and add your link there? -- Chris 73 | Talk 19:28, 10 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Do you really mean links to online games should be removed from all articles that contain them (saying you can't remove all "bad" links from all articles because there are too many of them means just that)? That's absurd because they have been here for ages and no one had any objections. As for adding a link to just one article, it contradicts what you said before, namely, that those links weren't contributing anything. I'm wondering what could have been the real motive for this removal. Is it possibly that you are trying to get some "karma points" here at wikipedia for making lots of changes? Practices like that won't get you far in the long run. Please stop now and think twice the next time you "fix" anything.

Like everybody else here, I remove content that i see unfit and add content that i see fit. And, if you're talking about real motive: what is yours? Adding content to the articles, or just trying to drive traffic to your site? You have not done anything else but adding links everywhere. You don't even have a login. You did not even state if you're affiliated with this site. I believe my removal of the links was justified. On the plus side, I have to note that your site seems to be indeed free, and does not even require an email adress for a login. Thats good. Glad you liked the images. It's a nice article, and deserves some images. The site which had the public domain images had some more, in case you need them. Check the image pages for the link to the source. Search for Niemeyer, most of them are PD, others you have to ask the author. About Image:Work of Oscar Niemeyer.jpg: I wasn't quite sure which building that is, but found a similar image titled as Praça da Liberdade. Is this correct? Does this have an english translation? Cricket images

You had added certain images to the Cricket article (now a featured article) from its German page. However the German image source does not have any copyright status (PD or GFDL) hence the images have been removed from the article. Please could you clarify the status of the original images? I came across something that isn't an article, but shouldn't be tagged for Speedy Deletion quite yet, either. What it really needs is the attention of an admin who is currently online. I clicked Recent Changes and looked for the name of someone I knew to be an admin. You posted an image of a Damascus steel pocketknife in that article. I guarantee you it is not Damascus steel, but pattern welded steel instead. Knifemakers deliveratly use the incorrect term because it sounds cooler. The image should be moved.Maury 00:28, 10 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Hi Chris 73, I have made a new photo of my pocket knife, which you can find here: [4]. In the German language there are no differents between the methods of forgeing steel pieces like this knife blade, it is always called Damaszenerstahl. For additional informations: My knife has been forged by Manfred Sachse, a knife-smith who has reinvented the methods of making Damaszenerstahl. Menstruation picture

Hi! Thanks a lot for your nice illustration of the menstrual cycle. I have two little requests: the body temperature graph cannot be quite right, since the body temperature at the end of the cycle is much higher than at the beginning, suggesting a sudden temperature drop at the onset of menstruation, which I believe does not occur. Or does it? There's the same issue for the red FSH hormone line. Also, could you add a word or two cautioning people that the day numberings are just averages and differ among women? • According to the Fair use article in Wikipedia, Fair use allows such things as these, with no license required:
  • Helping people to find a work. Search engines such as Google use reduced resolution portions of images to help people locate the image they are interested in.
  • Helping people to decide to purchase a work, by including parts of the work in descriptions. Retailers, particularly electronic retailers such as Amazon.com, commonly make fair use of cover art or portions of a work to help customers to decide to purchase a work, in the online situation effectively duplicating the normal shopping browsing experience.
    • Doesn't a picture of a commercial product promote the sale of the product, and therefore, the picture of Tambocor.jpg can be considered Fair Use?--AAAAA 02:10, 27 Sep 2004 (UTC)

I created that page almost from scratch, add photos to it nearly daily including nearly every photo on there, and added instructions to the dog breeds project to go look there for unused photos when creating a new breed page. So did I bother to go and look? NOOOOOoooo--the brain didn't remember such a photo on that page, so the brain didn't bother to even check. This is where I appreciate having other people on a collaborative project.

BTW, you did such a nice job on the Schipperke photo--anything you can do with Image:Pekeapoo.jpeg? I downloaded it myself & played a little, got it a bit more correct on the color but then the image became too dark (see Image:Pekeapoo_fx_wb.jpg), especially after I tried to get rid of the red eye a bit. I'm still a photoshop neophyte (and don't have te full PhShop, just Elements).

Hi. I thought Wikipedia:List of images/Nature/Animals/Dogs was your page, since I recognized a lot of the dog photos. Good work. I found the image using google image search, and noticed that the second entry was from Wikipedia. I also had my try with Image:Pekeapoo.jpeg, and uploaded the new image over the old one. See the history of the image for comparison (and don't forget to CTRL reload to see the new image). BTW, I am using the GIMP, which is almost as good as photoshop, but free. Not so very famous languages

Hi. Just wanted to ensure you that I looked at every article on Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Esoteric programming language related at least twice, and also voted to KEEP some of them, but most are in my opinion rubbish. That they were added all at once may be a bit overwhelming at first, but would you rather prefer me to add three articles a day to VfD for the next month? Again, my goal is to improve Wikipedia by keeping/improving the good and throwing out the bad. I am sure you have the same goals, and we just differ in what's good. That's what VfD is for. By the way, did you actually look at all articles before you voted KeepAll? Even O xml and TMMLPTEALPAITAFNFAL? Just curious -- Chris 73 Talk 16:09, Sep 29, 2004 (UTC)

You DID do a remarkably good job, hitting the spot with many of your coments for each separate language. I'm not sure that this is the right way to deal with VFD though. Many of the langauges do turn out to be encyclopedic, so I'm voting to keep en bloc. There's not so many of them that they take up any noticable amount of space, and I don't believe that will happen in future either. (As a note: you've used up more space on the server with the VFD than can be reclaimed from deleting these articles. Oh Dear.) Kim Bruning 16:43, 29 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Why do you hate esolangs so much? You made an incredible effort by VfD'ing and meaninglessly google-hit-testing all the esolangs and, like Kim Bruning just said, used more space with that than would be saved by deleting the langs. Wikipedia currently has the widest list of esolangs in the web. I think that's admirable and I see no reason why Wikipedia could not hang on to that status. If you think that Wikipedia is not a code repository, please nominate Hello world program for VfD too. Another thing that strikes me as odd is that you nominated something that you yourself also thought that should be preserved. What's the point of that?-O Also, before you judge languages as jokes and/or non-existents, see the External links -sections of them instead of searching with Google. Even Google is not almighty. I see a nice place for a huge VfD and/or Edit War here but I'll just use my superb wit and sarcasm instead of getting that low. --ZeroOne 21:53, 30 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Hi Chris, Thanks for downloading the bigger version of Image:Sunflowers.jpg. Did you also saturate the colours a little? The previous version didn't have particularly good colour in the leaves and sky, so its an improvement - but the yellows look a little too saturated to be natural now (on the other hand I'm not sure my monitor is callibrated properly, so it might be just me). -- Solipsist 17:14, 9 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Hi. I just downloaded the large image and made it a bit smaller. original size was 1MB, now its about 280kB. I did not touch the color controls at all. I guess someone at the USDA must have gone round and boosted the colours on most of their photos. Their gallery pages all look a little 'loud'.

They've got some impressive agriculture shots though. I noticed that most of the photos on the USDA gallery pages had already been harvested for Wikipedia. However searching on obvious keywords helped me find many more excellent photos to illustrate articles without images. -- Solipsist 08:12, 10 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Hi, and welcome to Wikipedia. About my image Barlach Magdeburger Ehrenmal on Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates: I went back to my original version and doctored around with the gimp. The original version is in focus, and only got out of focus while removing the grain in the image. In the current version I have despecled only the background, and the sculpture itself is still sharp. Please have a look and let me know if this is this better now? Uploading images: Prepare an image, descriptive filename, good resultion (larger is better, can easily be resized for articles), not too large filesize, preferred in jpg, gif or png format. On the menu on the left you see "Upload file". This gets you to the upload dialog, select the file, add a comment, and check the I affirm that the copyright holder. You'll get a small confirmation request if the filename has to be changed (e.g. "Barlach Magdeburger Ehrenmal.jpg" to "Barlach_Magdeburger_Ehrenmal.jpg") or if you overwrite an older file (which is not deleted but stored in the history). You'll get a link to the image site after a sucessful upload (e.g. Image:Barlach Magdeburger Ehrenmal.jpg). Add a proper description and Wikipedia:Image copyright tags, and you can use the image in pages (Wikipedia:Picture tutorial). For more info see the articles in Category:Image help. Hope this helps. The image looks good to me. The large source image is great, and the smaller image on the article also matches.(someone actualy made it a bit bigger, from 210 to 293 pixel). I usually try to to upload large resoltion images with at least 1024 pixel in the larger direction, so your upload de:Bild:Rana lessonae (Salagon) 20040531.jpg is cool. The only difference I would have done is a slightly higher compression ratio, the current image is 1 Mb, but that is personal preference. -- Chris 73 Talk 22:30, Oct 18, 2004 (UTC)

Thanks again, Chris, I am reassured. The compression ratio would be the option "Picture Quality" in Adobe, I guess. In fact, I chose maximum quality, but maybe that's not necessary. I use the following:

• IrfanView for quick editing (Brightness, contrast,...) and viewing, saving my files usually with a JPG compression ratio of 85%, available for Windows
• The GIMP for high level editing, almost the same functionality as adobe photoshop, for Windows and linux
• Openoffice.org "Draw" for creating and editing vector graphics, for Windows and linux

Agreed! I copied it to Massachusetts, where it also seems appropriate, since it's the state house. It seems that capital cities get all the best photos, while the broader regions have articles that are almost entirely text, and thus visually dull. I've tried to add lots of my own photos to prefectures of Japan, including Hokkaido, Aomori Prefecture, Akita Prefecture, Kyoto Prefecture, Nagasaki Prefecture, Okinawa Prefecture. That is a known problem with internet browsers. You uploaded one image, and the browser put this one in the cache. After you uploaded another image (e.g. different format), the browser used the old cached image, and stretched it to the new dimensions, hence the warped appearance. To fix this, simply clear your browser cache by pressing "CTRL" & click Reload at the same time for Internet explorer, or just click reload on firefox. This clears the cache and updates the image. There are black spots on Image:Bundesbrief - 001.png at the top and on the right, and to the left of and below the rightmost seal. Postcards: look for the entries on "Teufelsbrücke"! But anyway, I found out that none of these show the original bridge: the bridge built in the 12th or early 13th century (I've found both 1198 and 1230 as dates) was a wooden construction, which was replaced in the 16th century by the stone bridge depicted in all those old images. BTW, under U.S. law such old images would clearly be PD. But under Swiss law, the situation isn't that clear. For instance, there are three more old images at [6], but the library claims copyright. And unlike fair use, the decision whether something is PD or not depends on local law! Lupo 11:32, 4 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Image:Bundesbrief - 001.png says This is a file from the Wikimedia Commons, a repository of free content hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation. Please see the image description page for licensing information.. Click on the "Image decription" link to get to here. Basically, if you link any image, wikipedia looks for it on its wiki first, and if it does not find anything it searches the commons. The stock exchange is a provider of free images. At the bottom of the image it says: There are no usage restrictions for this photo., i.e. it is public domain. Occasionally, there will be a different message saying for e.g. that the user must be contacted before using this image for commercial work. Does this answer your question? Sorry to bust into your conversation, but as Chris has explained to me, we currently can use images on the commons only through a search preference: if the software doesn't find an image on the local wiki (en: in this case), it looks on the commons. If you now delete that image on en:, a future uploader on en: who just happens to use the name of this image will get no indication whatsoever that he is overriding an existing image. I don't like that at all, it opens the door to endless confusions (and to a new kind of vandalism, too). Lupo 23:27, 8 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Commons template

Hi. You just removed the <br style="clear:both" /> line from the Template:Commons. Without that the template is occassionally indented by other pictures (e.g. on Joystick). Is there a special reason to remove this line? Just curious. Chris 73 Talk 06:33, Nov 9, 2004 (UTC)

My reason for removing the br tag was that it was messing up the spacing on some articles; unnecessary whitespace between the "External links" header and what followed was inserted. I also noted that on (e.g.) Template:Wikiquote there is no such tag, so it can surely be lived without. It seems better to handle unusual cases as they come up than have spacing always bad; besides, what would images be doing in the external links section anyway? (I see in the Joystick case a giant image that crosses sections, but that must qualify as unusual.) What do you think? VeryVerily 06:49, 9 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Basically, I created a number of images before I fully understood the details of licensing, and so all by original maps were simply released to whoever wanted to use them. I suppose this counts as CopyrightedFreeUse. On later images, I've put GFDL tags, but if the Kiribati map doesn't have one, it came before I started using GFDL. Someone has actually made a {{Vardion}} tag for the early images, although I think that CopyrightedFreeUse is probably good enough. Thanks for checking, anyway. -- Vardion 23:45, 12 Nov 2004 (UTC)

I was having some trouble trying to put a white margin around the image in Template:November_15_selected_anniversaries but I ended up messing everything. The image got too big no matter what I tried. That's when wikipedia reported me that you had done the job while I was editing.

Sorry for being picky about this, and I am not a legal expert, but wouldn't the operating system be a software, which would be copyright to Commodore International? I am pretty sure that microsoft considers its windows and MS-Dos operating systems copyrighted. (see [10]). Personally, I think only screenshots of free programs can be used at the commons, i.e. Linux, Firefox, or OpenOffice.org, which would be licensed as GFDL. Maybe we should put this issue on the village pump at the commons. • You seen my comment about fair use and commons: they're not "allowed", so it's right that "fair use" should be removed, but we needed the distinction between "fair use screenshots" and "free screenshots".
• Your question is good, but I believe it doesn't apply to most of the cases. If the screenshot is about the OS then the owner of the OS can (and probably will) complain. If the screenshot is about a program (for example the most common case is when the screen isn't wholly visible, or there are not OS specific features on it) then I do not believe that the OS creators have anything to claim about the picture. On that particular C64 image there is basically nothing from the OS (unless you count that combination of border and background color part of the OS, which is by my reckoning would be ridiculous, unpatentable and uncopyrightable) and the picture shows a free program only, so I am reasonably sure that such pictures are okay.

Good example of the above can be any screenshot of FireFox on windoze. I'd say that if there's only FireFox visible (with window decorations), or if it's not the capture of the whole screen containing windoze OS parts (start button and panel, etc) then it's free and micro$oft have zero rights on that. If you would capture their program (office) or the windoze desktop, then it is probably their ©opyright violation. If you make a full screen shot with FireFox in the middle and all the windoze cruft around it, well, it's probably better not to tag it as free, or even better to cut away the micro$hit parts.

In case of an OS without visual hints (like C=64) I don't think it's a question. ;-)

Article Licensing

Hi, I've started the Free the Rambot Articles Project which has the goals of getting users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to...

1. ...all U.S. state, county, and city articles...
2. ...all articles...

using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) version 1.0 and 2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to the GFDL (which every contribution made to Wikipedia is licensed under), but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles (See the Multi-licensing Guide for more information). Since you are among the top 1000 most active Wikipedians, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles.

Nutshell: Wikipedia articles can be shared with any other GFDL project but open/free projects using the incompatible Creative Commons Licenses (e.g. WikiTravel) can't use our stuff and we can't use theirs. It is important to us that other free projects can use our stuff. So we use their licenses too.

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the {{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}} template (or {{MultiLicensePD}} for public domain) into their user page, but there are other templates for other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1

I agree to [[Wikipedia:Multi-licensing|multi-license]] all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
