Education

• I don't know what courses he took, but he did not study film as an undergrad at Johns Hopkins, but at USC as a grad student. He majored in romance languages, specifically French and Italian. He has always stressed to me (his daughter) that it is important to get a liberal arts foundation and life experience. The technical aspects of film are easy enough to learn and don't really need that much study. It is life's richness and experience that help you make good films. In 2012, Walter Murch was invited to serve as a mentor for the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative, an international philanthropic programme that pairs masters in their disciplines with emerging talents for a year of one-to-one creative exchange. Out of a very gifted field of candidates, Murch chose young Italian film editor Sara Fgaier as his protégée.
