Road map
[edit]Preliminary template for an article series on the History of Switzerland. My intention was to follow about this roadmap:
- Old Swiss Confederacy: Starting from the Bundesbrief from 1291 cover the history of the independece wars against the Habsburg dynasty. Slow expansion first by including Lucerne, then Zurich, and so on, leading to the "Acht Orte". Then subsequent expansion to the "Dreizehn Orte". Wars against Burgund (Charles the Bold). "Schwabenkrieg" (resulting in the de-facto independency). Should this go until 1536, when Berne occupied the Vaud? 1513 may be a bit an arbitrary date, maybe we should also cover the Battle of Marignano (1515) and related events in the 1520s here.
- Reformation: Zwingli, the second "Landfriede" (1531) and the subsequent re-establishment of catholizism in many areas. Calvin in Geneva. Also cover the 30 years war in the Grisons (Jürg Jenatsch), which largely was a religious war, too.
- Ancien Régime: de-jure independency after the Treaty of Westphalia (1648), rise of the Patricians; fourth "Landfriede" in 1712 (final end of religious wars in Switzerland), growing discrepancy between cities and their dependent rural areas (various peasant revolts were suppressed).
- Napoleonic era may actually be a misnomer. Should cover the Helvetic Republic, French occupation, the mediation act, the restoration following the Congress of Vienna 1815. Rise of the liberal powers. Up to and including the "Sonderbundskrieg".
- Federal state: Starting with the constitution of 1848. Revision of the constitution 1874.
- World Wars: Neutrality, military issues, Réduit doctrine. "Geistige Landesverteidigung". Treatment of refugees. Frontists. Also cover the time between the wars. This is probably going to be a controversial article!
- Modern history: the rest :-) Women's voting rights (1971, separation of the Canton of Jura, refusal to enter the European Union, membership in the U.N....
If we can pack something on economic necessities into these articles, all the better. The Reisläuferei (mercenaries) was an important economic factor until about the 17th century... Always dependent on corn imports. Export of cheese early on (14/15th cent.?) Industrialization, starting with textile factories in St. Gall and watchmaking in the Jura... (late 18th cent) heavy industry in the first half of the 19th century (Von Roll, GF, ...)
