Merged

[edit]

I merged the page Changeling (Marvel Comics) into Changeling (comics). After all, do we really need two pages, Changeling (DC Comics) and Changeling (Marvel Comics) for two obscure comic book characters? (The Changeling (DC Comics) article didn't even exist yet at the time I merged Changeling (Marvel Comics) into Changeling (comics).) I think we should not use disambiguation phrases like Changeling (Marvel Comics) because people may have a tendency to forget, or be unaware that, the character exists also in another comics book universe (especially in cases where the character is obscure in one universe but famous in another). Also, this follows the precedent of Sandman (comics) and Captain Marvel, which are articles discussing characters from both Marvel Comics and DC Comics. --Lowellian 20:13, Dec 11, 2003 (UTC)

Argh, I don't agree with this at all. The characters have no real relationship to one another, other than similar powers, and the DC character's article has the potential to become quite long. I think having multiple pages with a disambiguation page at (comics) is exactly the right thing to do here. And yes, I think the Sandman and Captain Marvel pages should also be changed in this way. -mhr 21:01, 11 Dec 2003 (UTC)
I agree with mhr. Putting them into one page would be like putting Golf (the sport) and VW Golf (the car) into one page. -- Timwi 21:06, 11 Dec 2003 (UTC)
I added a related note on my opinion to Talk:List of Marvel Comics characters, if anyone cares... -mhr 21:09, 11 Dec 2003 (UTC)
I agree with mhr on this, now that I've seen it. Here's what I propose: Changeling of course, stays as it is. Changeling (comics) should be a further disambiguation page linking to the two new pages Changeling (comics - DC) and Changeling (comics - Marvel). Of course Changeling would have to point to both of the new pages, as well as to the other links it currently has. UtherSRG 00:21, 12 Dec 2003 (UTC)
As an historical point, UtherSRG's suggestion is essentially what I'd originally created, except that I used Changeling (Marvel Comics) and Changeling (DC Comics) (but hadn't gotten around to writing the article for the latter).
I prefer the disambiguation phrases I used (which probably is no surprise). I tend to prefer phrases that scan well in English over those that are in true significance order but look funny in English; I would go the other way if Wikipedia supported a tiered disambiguation mechanism (for instance, Changeling (comics) (Marvel Comics), which unfortunately pipes to Changeling - argh). That said, I don't care enough to argue any further about which disambiguation form we use, so if this doesn't persuade you then I will quietly give in on that point. :-) -mhr 00:44, 12 Dec 2003 (UTC)
I also commented on UtherSRG's related point at Talk:List of Marvel Comics characters. -mhr 00:50, 12 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Heh. I just finished splitting the article in two along these lines, and then while checking the "what links here" to clean up disambiguation I popped over to see that it had been discussed over a year ago. It seemed like such an obvious thing to do that I just went ahead and did. Bryan 00:21, 4 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I removed the following from the article because I don't think RPG stats belong in Wikipedia. Since large numbers of these "vital stats" sections have been added to various articles, I'm using Talk:Strength level (comics) to discuss this in general. Bryan 08:05, 22 Jan 2004 (UTC)
